A Map for Hand Papermaking

handpapermakingmapLet’s face it, professional hand papermaking equipment can be expensive. And, it can be tricky to easily find your local papermaking workshops, makers, and educators if you’re new to the scene.

So, in an effort to connect, grow, and promote hand papermaking, and with the assistance of light roast coffee, I’ve compiled a map via Google Maps.

Full Map View >

Join your local community paper studio, visit a papermaking museum, buy locally made papers, and say hello to your paper neighbors. Also, share the map with friends who might be interested in learning about papermaking history, process, or artistic techniques.

There’s a handy list on the left, and you’ll notice that red indicates a mill or studio, green indicates a university, and blue indicates a museum.

Clicking on a marker or on a name in the list should give you a corresponding website. This map has a permanent place on the Paperlinks page, and here’s a shareable direct link: http://bit.ly/1FVNOC1

Help fill this map out—it’s a work in progress!

If you have additions or corrections, feel free to comment below (scroll all the way down) with a website, name and location.

Onward and upward,
May Babcock

      • Hello Paper Slurry Author,

Concordia University in Montreal, Canada offers paper making courses.

FBRS 371 Paper: Surface and Object
This studio course introduces both Western and Eastern (Japanese) methods of processing raw materials to make pulp and form sheets of paper to be used in expressive art forms. Printing, dyeing, cutting, and bookbinding are used in the consideration of paper as surface and medium.

        FBRS 372 Paper Works
This studio course introduces students to making paper as part of an expressive material practice. Sculptural processes such as vacuum relief, casting, and armature building are explored alongside interdisciplinary approaches such as assemblage and the book as object, among others.

We have a complete studio that includes:
Two 2lb capacity Reina Hollander beaters
        One hydropulper
        A vacuum table
        A hydraulic press
        Floor drains
Moulds and vats for forming sheets up to 22” x 30”
        Two sheet dryers

Please add our program to your amazing map!

        Thank you,

        Elaine Denis

  10. This is a great idea that ever comes out for the global hand papermaking community. For me, it came out at the right time where everybody can connect to each other whether its a push or a touch. One suggestion, I think those included should have a hand papermaking facilities at least or related to it like sources of materials, tools & equipment, skills, etc. if not we will be crowded and over populated. BTW my future hand papermaking and crafts center is in Cabcaben-Townsite, Mariveles, 2109 Bataan, Philippines to be exact. I will give the exact point on the map when I am already on my final location.

  11. I found wonderful handmade paper in the capital of Bhutan: Thimpu. There is 1 location there where you can visit the workplace and buy the paper.

  30. Hi I am a paper artist from Melbourne, Australia and would love to be included in the list. I have website and blog that are separate entities and I’ve been making paper for around thirty years. I do very occasionally run classes from home and we now have a guest room for visiting papermakers!

  31. Hi May,

Please add my studio, Viridor Arts, to your map; what a superb resource!
    112 E Route 66, Suite 105 A, Flagstaff AZ 86001
Open to collaborations if anyone wants to make paper on historic Route 66! Located in downtown Flagstaff in a 1920ʼs brick building with 16ʼ ceilings, skylights, and large north-facing windows. Formerly a radio broadcasting studio, the renovations preserved a sound-proof room for the 2lb Reina beater. Open by appointment only. With advanced arrangements our guest house is also available to visiting artists.

    See you in Santa Fe!

    Laura Merrick Roe

  32. This map is a fabulous resource!

Please add Papel Texano, a handmade paper arts collaborative in Austin Texas (precise address is 1400 Ruth Ave, Austin, TX 78757). Website is http://papeltexano.org.

We are a very new non-profit shared studio in a 2-car garage, with a 14 gallon hydropulper, 20-ton press, and a very innovative vacuum couching process that rescues about 65% of the water, reducing our environmental impact, lowering utility bills, and doing away with puddles on the floor!

  33. I’ve been working with Salina Art Center on their Paper Making Studio for the last year. My very own Oracle shipped this week! I have my studio in Lindsborg, Kansas.

  34. Hey May! Could you update the address for my studio? My studio now is at the Cherry Pit Collective, at 604 E 31 ST, and its public enough to have lessons and classes there. Thanks!

  35. Great resource, thank you! A couple of updates to note:

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center has moved to 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, Maryland 20781.

  36. Wauw, what a good way to find each other. Thank you for doing such a great job.

I learned most of the skills from the dutch paper windmill de Schooolmeester. I will work on the translation of my website into english.

  37. Thank you so much for compiling all this information! Its a great tool to get in touch with paper people, especially when traveling.

So I´d love to find my own workshop in this map and through this invite all paper people to show up when around. I`m a producer of handmade paper and do also offer workshops and courses together with other artists in handpapermaking, bookbinding, printing and so on.

  40. Hi – what a great idea! I am a fine art papermaker in Arvada Colorado – a suburb just west of Denver. My studio is at 5311 Jellison St., Arvada, CO 80002 but will be at a new location in Wheat Ridge sometime next year: 5265 Pierson Court, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. I have been making paper-based sculpture and installation art for over 20 years.

  41. This is great! I’d like to add my little mark to the map. I’m just now in the process of transitioning from ‘travelling papermaker’ to home based cottage industry, setting up a schedule of workshops for visiting individuals & small groups. I don’t have a website.
    I’m using the name ‘Papermoon’.
I’m located in Seaford, South Australia
I have a home made beater & cooking facilities, along with all the requirements to have a small group of less than 10 people. I’m the only papermaker offering classes/workshops in the state, as far as I know! Thanks

  42. Oh, as an addendum to my introduction: I have been teaching papermaking for over 20 years, children & adults. School holiday programs & community centres & private groups. References available on request. cheers Cher McGrath : Papermoon

  43. Thank you May! and it was nice to finally meet you at the Dard Conference.
My very first papermaking workshop was in the late 70’s in California and I have been hooked ever since! I recently transferred to Denver from Houston and have a paper/printmaking studio with the emphasis on paper: western molds, pulp painting, 3-D, Pulp Spraying. Website to come…but for now https://www.facebook.com/Paper-Print-Artist-JFGold-167255593443070/ and instagram: joycefgold_spiritpaper
My studio is in West Highlands, Denver, CO.
    Thank you!

    • Hi Joyce, yes, great meeting you as well! I’ve add your studio to the map, and please let me know when you have the website up, so I can add the link as well. Thanks! – May

  44. ¡Hola May!

I’m in the process of closing down Viridor Arts, my paper studio on Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Please remove my listing from the map. On September 1st you can add a new marker, in La Serena, Chile!!! My husband’s accepted a new job as Deputy Director of Gemini Observatory. This is a permanent position, we’ll get residence cards, enroll the kids in Spanish-speaking schools (they’ll be 4 & 6.5), and move my studio equipment! David Reina is in the process of wiring-up a replacement 220/50 motor for my beater. I’ll send an update when we’re settled in. Happy to host any papermakers visiting La Serena!

    • Hi Laura, wow, congrats!! I’d love to see photos of your new studio and Chile once you’re settled. Cheers, – May

We have been up and running for 15 years and a look at the website will tell folks all about us.
    Best wishes, Claudia

  47. Hi,

I am the new Book Arts Coordinator at the Southwest School of Art. While we are listed as being in San Antonio, Texas on the interactive map, in the list of places below it, it lists us as being in Poland, which is inaccurate. You may wish to update that.

Also, do you or anyone know where I can get a hold of hemp or hemp half-stuff? There used to be a source in Canada but I can no longer find it…

  48. Hi, I am Susanne Baker and I am based in Greensboro North Carolina. I make paper by hand and sell it at the local farmers market. I work with the farmers, they give me plant material that they would normally compost or till into the ground. I make a variety of papers which I sell and use to make books and artwork. I also do limited edition books where I do letterpress printing on paper that I make. I have a Hollander beater and a Critter and can make pulp to order.

  49. Hi,
I am plastienne – paper in France.
Is-it possible to include my studio, L’Atelier du Papetier, on your map ?
I`ve set up a paperworkshop since two years near the sea, at Trégastel in Brittany in France. I`m a producer of handmade paper “sur mesure” (linen paper, cotton, others vegetable fibers and wood) and do also offer workshops and courses.

Thank you so much for compiling all this information! Its a great tool to get in touch with paper people.

  50. Hi. Would you accept papermaking artists? I for example make paper from time to time but more than that make lots of joomchi. Or felted paper. Its really re-making paper. Or papermaking in reverse+. You start with existing sheets of long fiber paper then wet and manipulate them and voila they become a single bonded sheet. Anyway. I’m on south whidbey island about 50 miles n of seattle.

    Thank you for this!!!
